Course Description:

Using the MPLS core network to provide multiple services has always been an objective of the technology. The emergence of Layer 2 VPNs and the Virtual Private Wire Service as a part of Any Transport over MPLS (AToM) began in 2000 with standards created by service providers like Level3 and Sprint. The notion of using the lower cost, easier to maintain and manage MPLS core to transport layer 2 services such as Frame Relay, ATM and Ethernet has been in development ever since.

This insightful and revealing course has been designed to focus on the systems approach, the engineering thinking behind the world of transporting Layer 2 Ethernet Virtual Private Wire services over MPLS networks. The course lays the technical groundwork for Ethernet L2 services for services such as Metro-Ethernet. This course is designed as an instructor led course over one day. The course is delivered in a swift, detailed, and understandable way by knowledgeable and experienced MPLS networking specialists.

The course is a combination of knowledge training, systems analysis, with hands-on examples and exercises using Cisco routers and Cisco IOS, revealing the details of L2VPN and Virtual Private Wire service protocols in a swift, comprehensive, and understandable way.

Course Objectives:

To develop a “hands-on” skill set targeted at Advanced MPLS L2VPN and VPWS and the common Control Plane protocols in the following key areas:

  • Develop a configuration level application and implementation skill set targeted at L2VPN VPWS architecture and requirements in the following key areas:
  • Layer 2 Etehrnet transport services using MPLS core networking
  • IP/MPLS Control Plane modification in support of L2 and L2 VPN services
  • See the example configuration of VPWS on manufacturer equipment
  • Understand the detail operation of ethernet-based services using the MPLS core network

Audience:

The target audience for this course is anyone in Engineering, Test, Customer Support, Technical Marketing, or even Sales and Marketing that requires a solid and complete understanding of the fundamental operations of MPLS L2 Services and desires hands-on skills that can be applied to their job function.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Operations individuals that will provide L2VPN VPWS configuration and support services
  • Network Design Engineers that need to understand L2VPN VPWS services and applications
  • Network Management individuals that are providing element and network management tools
  • Technical sales individuals that must be able to correlate features with functionality
  • Technical marketing individuals that want more than just a basic understanding of L2VPN VPWS
  • Certification Track individuals that need to expand their knowledge and studies
  • Network Administrators

Course Prerequisites:

This course to appeal to anyone needing the skills and knowledge of MPLS Layer 2 services. The ideal student will have some experience in networking and operations, with knowledge of MPLS, MPLS Layer 3 VPN’s, Traffic Engineering, IP addressing and routing. All students must attend with a lap-top computer in order to interface to the Router Lab. If the course is held at a classroom where computers are available, the Lap-top computer will not be required.

Course Materials:

Students will be provided with a Course Student Guide and a Lab Guide. Also, a lab system for configuration and labs will be provided.

Related Content:

This course is part of the CellStream “101 Series” Courses. This course should be taken after the MPLS 101, 201, and 301 classes. Related to this course and a great next step is the IPv4 Routing 101 class. After this class, if interested in the next generation IP, you should consider the Hands On IPv6 class.
